Aishwarya Hariharan Week 16: An Unforgettable Memory

An Unforgettable Memory

Memories. The first thing I thought about when I saw the word ‘memories’ was when I got lucky, my dog. The struggle that came with getting my dog made the efforts so much more worth it than simply just getting a dog handed to me when I asked for it.

It all started off in 6th grade when my teacher brought two of his dogs to school on a regular basis. We would have so much fun with the dog, playing with it, dressing it up and just staying back during our breaks and after school to play fetch with the dog. The smile his dog gave me was something I wanted to feel every minute of the day. That couldn’t be the case if I didn’t have a dog though. I always found dogs fascinating and dreamed of having one when I grew older but I never imagined getting one until I graduated high school and was living by myself. That being said, when my teacher brought his dogs to school, it just gave me a sudden urge to get a dog as I feel like it gave me a smile that I’ve always wanted.

Of course, I asked my parents and my dad said no. I wasn’t too surprised because he was never a huge fan of dogs, but my mom began to want a dog after I started asking as well. My brother, me and my mom all wanted to get a pet dog but my dad was worried that all the work would fall on him. At one point in the beginning of 7th grade, I really wanted a dog and my dad felt that it would make me feel better to just go to pet shelters and look at dogs. He told us that we wouldn’t be getting a dog so not to get our hopes up but that we could go. It was a week from our birthday when we decided to finally take some time out of our weekend to go visit a pet shelter. Almost immediately once I walked in, I fell in love with every dog there. I couldn’t pick every dog I saw, so I asked my dad if we could get her/him. Of course, he said wasn’t that inclined to get the dog.

As we walked towards the middle of the very long, wide, and huge animal shelter, I saw a dog that shined and stood out to me more than anything else. My parents were behind me looking at the dogs before but I immediately called my mom over. My mom fell in love with the dog and so did my brother right after. We didn’t leave that place until we got my dad to come see the dog. The owners of the shelter let the dog out of the crate and let us play with her. My dad fell in love with the dog immediately when he petted her and started playing with her. Before I knew it, my dad came up to us, and said, “Okay, I give in. Do you want to get her?” I certainly started screaming and so did my mom and brother. Soon enough, my dad was signing the papers and we were walking out with our new dog, Lucky. That was definitely a lifelong memory that I will never forget.

  1. Awwwww! This is such a wholesome and loving story of how you got your dog. I love how your father ended up giving in to you, your mother, and your brother's demands and ultimately falling in love with the dog. This is such a sweet story, and I thank you for sharing this important memory of yours with us!

  2. Wow, this is such an incredibly wholesome story! This story gives me the excitement I could not get when my family got our dog, Rocco. When we first went to the shelter, we tried getting a puppy who seemed to like me more than my brother. However, we could not get it because he had to have some treatment before and was placed on hold from being adopted. One day when I took the bus home from school, my mom and my brother did not reach home until 5 PM. I kept calling, and they said they had a surprise. As an ignorant little kid, I was pretty pissed they chose the dog without, and the negative energy between my dog and I took almost a year to break.

  3. Hi Aishwarya! Thank you for sharing such a heartwarming memory! I have always wanted a cat and I don't think my dad will ever let me get one, but I am so happy for you. I love how you remember the details of the event and how your whole family really fell in love with your dog at first sight.

  4. Hi Aishwarya! Thank you for sharing such wonderful memories. You are definitely LUCKY to have adopted this new family member. The best things come unexpected, similar to how you never expected to have a dog before graduating. I truly wish you and Lucky good health and happiness.

  5. Hi Aishwarya,
I can relate to how your dad initially felt. Taking care of a dog is a lot of work and I can barely manage to keep my room clean and of course my sanity intact every week. My brother is always sad that I cannot spend as much time with him as I used to, and I would certainly not want that happening to a pet. I do not know how you manage all your responsibilities without getting distracted by Lucky every second. I am glad your father felt the joy you experienced receiving a dog’s loving smile for the first time. I hope your family continues to share that joy for as long as possible.

  6. Hey Aishwarya, I've always wanted a dog, but for me it was actually the other way. My mom is the one who primarily doesn't want a pet. I am so incredibly happy and insanely jealous that you have a dog now, and I think one of the best things about them is probably that they inspire mostly good memories and dispel bad memories pretty much always. I've always wanted a really big dog that I could do homework against and play with, and I hope my parents give in one day like they did for you.

  7. Hi Aishwarya, it was great to read a story about something so important to you. Our memories are dominated by things that we hold significant, like dogs or family members. Since we spend so much time around family, only certain situations stand out in our memories. You mentioned the moment you got your dog being a key memory, and moments like those are what you'll remember even if you get other pets. I got a dog pretty recently and I can definitely relate to the experience of trying to convince your parents to get one.

  8. Hi Aishwarya, your blog was so heartwarming and I really enjoyed reading about your dog, Lucky. It’s a great memory for you! I really love pets but my parents say it’s a lot of work, which I can understand. So far, I have met a few cats, a few dogs, two kittens, and a rabbit too, and honestly I loved all of them. They were all so cute! It was nice to hear how your Dad changed his mind as soon as he saw Lucky. Maybe I need to take my family on a trip to a shelter. I also loved how you built up suspense throughout the story. Although I knew that you would get Lucky because of the beginning of the blog, I still found myself hoping you guys got Lucky throughout, and I’m so glad that you did in the end.

I think it is so heartwarming that your dad was so moved when he first held Lucky; it feels like a story that would be read in a book. The fact that this memory is unforgettable for you showcases your immensely close and loving relationship with Lucky. I wish you more beautiful memories with your dog!
